In a July 17 blog post titled “Against choosing your political allegiances based on who is ‘pro-crypto,’” Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin urged crypto users to scrutinize candidates’ broader values rather than just their stance on digital assets. He highlighted that some “pro-crypto” politicians might not have clear positions on important issues like privacy, digital identity, and access to information. Buterin pointed to Coinbase’s Stand With Crypto initiative as an example, noting that its key bills did not assess politicians on broader tech freedoms. He warned that governments with authoritarian tendencies might selectively support crypto, such as Russia using it to evade sanctions while opposing it for surveillance reasons.
