Former Prime Minister urges Thailand to explore digital assets and regulatory sandboxes to adapt to global trends.
Former PM Calls for Crypto Education
Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s former Prime Minister, has urged the government to study cryptocurrencies to keep up with global digitization trends. Speaking at a lecture in Hua Hin, he emphasized that understanding digital assets is crucial as the world shifts toward the digital economy.
“Currencies May Outnumber Countries”
Shinawatra warned of a future where the number of cryptocurrencies surpasses the total number of nations. He called on Thai citizens and policymakers to think critically about the impact of digital assets.
Global Trends Prompt Thailand’s Focus
The former PM highlighted global trends, including discussions of using Bitcoin for national debt, as reasons for Thailand to explore crypto opportunities. Such developments underline the importance of understanding the digital economy’s dynamics.
“There are already many cryptocurrencies. Some people say that in the future, we will have more currencies than countries. Today, Thai people must think and understand this.”
Thailand’s Current Crypto Initiatives
In 2024, Thailand launched a crypto regulatory sandbox, allowing businesses to experiment with digital assets. This move, along with initiatives like digital cash handouts and institutional crypto adoption, reflects the country’s cautious embrace of the sector.
Cross-Border Crypto Collaboration
Thailand has also partnered with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to explore tokenized cross-border settlements, furthering its engagement with digital finance.
