A cryptocurrency forum moderator relocates with his family after escaping a kidnapping and torture plot in Quebec.
Moderator Targeted Over Alleged Crypto Wealth
A Quebec-based cryptocurrency moderator has gone into hiding after an alleged kidnapping attempt by four suspects seeking his Bitcoin wallet password. Despite their belief that he held millions, the moderator revealed his holdings were worth only $10,000.
The ordeal began in November when masked individuals targeted his home. Days later, the suspects confronted him near his residence while he was driving his daughter to daycare. The confrontation led to their arrests.
Suspects and Charges
The four suspects, including two minors, were charged with conspiracy to kidnap and firearm-related offenses. All were released on house arrest pending trial in March. Police advised the victim to relocate, citing organized crime links.
Escaping a Dangerous Situation
To ensure safety, the moderator now moves between temporary residences with his family. Adding to his challenges, Quebec’s Youth Protection Department has become involved due to concerns about his children’s welfare.
Rising Crypto-Related Violence in Canada
This incident highlights increasing violence in Canada’s crypto space. Last November, cryptocurrency influencer Kevin Mirshahi’s body was discovered months after his disappearance. Around the same time, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was abducted in Toronto and released after a $1 million ransom was paid electronically.
Crypto and Security Risks
As crypto adoption grows, incidents like these underscore the importance of safeguarding personal information and adopting strong security measures to deter criminal activity.
