Nigerian Judge postpones ruling on detained Binance executive Gambaryan’s case due to seminar absence.
Judge Misses Binance Executive Gambaryan’s Bail Hearing
Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan’s bail hearing was postponed after Judge Emeka Nwite missed the session on October 9. Reports indicate that the judge missed the hearing to attend a seminar at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja. As a result, Gambaryan’s hearing has been rescheduled for Friday, October 11.
Money Laundering Charges
The Nigerian government charged Gambaryan with money laundering and tax evasion in February 2024. However, critics argue these accusations are unfounded.
Former IRS special agent Richard Weber voiced his concerns, stating, “Tigran is a hostage. He did nothing wrong. He is sitting in a prison for a crime he did not commit.” He emphasized the prolonged nature of Gambaryan’s detention, noting that he has been incarcerated for more than 200 days. Weber added, “I don’t even think the Nigerian government knows what he did wrong, and yet they are holding him there.”
Health Concerns for Gambaryan
As the situation unfolds, calls for Gambaryan’s release continue to grow. He has faced significant health issues during his time at Kuje prison, notably suffering from a herniated disc, which led to alarming footage from a court hearing last month. In this footage, Gambaryan was seen visibly in pain, pleading, “I’m not okay. Why couldn’t I use a goddamn wheelchair? This is a show. I’m innocent—why are you doing this to me?”
Healthcare Denial
Gambaryan has consistently reported being denied adequate medical care. U.S. lawmakers French Hill (R-AR) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) expressed their concerns after visiting him last June, claiming he was suffering from malaria and double pneumonia. Hill stated, “Tigran must be immediately granted a humanitarian release, the remaining charges dropped, and he must return home to America where he belongs.”
Calls for Release
Supporters and U.S. lawmakers are demanding his release, claiming he is being used as a scapegoat. His health has deteriorated in custody, raising concerns about inhumane treatment. Tigran’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has also spoken out about the dire circumstances surrounding her husband’s detention. She expressed her frustration, saying, “They cannot keep playing games with my husband’s life like this. This entire situation is inhumane and degrading, and I am fed up.” Her statement highlights the emotional toll this ordeal has taken on their family, as she demands accountability for the treatment her husband has received.
